This page contains important information on ads.txt files.

What is ads.txt?

Ads.txt is a document stored on a website’s root domain that contains information about advertising for that particular domain.

More specifically, it’s a text file that contains a list of companies that the domain has authorized as sellers of its digital inventory. This is used for the purposes of programmatic advertising.

This initiative was introduced by the IAB Tech Lab as a means of improving transparency around programmatic advertising.

As a publicly accessible document, a domain’s ads.txt file can be seen by both crawlers programmed to find it and individuals who want to ensure that they are only buying inventory from third parties authorized to sell it. This also protects the latter from purchasing counterfeit inventory.

Do I need to create an ads.txt file?

An ads.txt file is not necessary for every website, only those that include some kind of programmatic advertising. The advertising within SmartFrames falls under this category.

How do I add the SmartFrame publisher ID to my website’s ads.txt page?

The code you need to add to this ads.txt file will be generated by SmartFrame on demand. Please get in touch with us to obtain this if you have not already received it.

For users with existing ads.txt files

If you already have an ads.txt file on your domain with a list of authorized inventory sellers, download this file and add the publisher ID and code provided by us to this list. Save the file and re-upload it to the root directory of your site.

For users without existing ads.txt files

If you do not already have an ads.txt file, create a new file in Text Edit or a similar program on your computer before adding the publisher ID and code provided by us. Save it as a .txt file with the file name ads.txt before uploading this to your website’s root domain.

How do I know this has been successfully added to my site?

Once you’ve uploaded (or re-uploaded) your file, you can check it has been successfully added by adding /ads.txt to the end of your domain in your browser’s command bar.
So, if your website address is www.smartframe.io, your file should be visible at www.smartframe.io/ads.txt
