The way we advertise products has changed drastically in the last decade. We take a look at what resonates with audiences today as well as the importance of creativity and authenticity.

There’s no doubt that the increase in digital media and social platforms has revolutionized how we advertise.

Brands can no longer rely on traditional formats like newspapers or radio; the advertising ecosystem is now more complicated than ever.

When it comes to potential advertising reach, some of the stats are mind-boggling:

Facebook’s potential advertising reach is more than 2 billion people

TikTok’s potential advertising reach is more than 18% of the total adult internet users

YouTube’s potential reach extends to 31.5% of the total population on Earth

With so many digital platforms to choose from, brands are constantly battling for attention. Understanding what makes a person interested in your campaign on a specific platform is a science.

We’ve already looked into whether AI tools are a threat to creativity. And now, with the help of some creatives in the field, we’ll examine the role of creativity in advertising in 2024.

What advertising used to look like

It used to be the case that brands and agencies could only communicate their messages through billboards, TV commercials, print ads, and radio spots.

These methods were effective in reaching large audiences but lacked precision, provided minimal performance data, and could not prompt direct action from the audience.

It was purely a matter of the ad looking interesting enough for the audience to consider a purchase.

Key to the success of these kinds of ads were catchy jingles, striking visuals, and easy-to-repeat phrases to capture attention.

All of these still hold some relevance today, but, for the most part, the world has moved away from product-centric advertising and embraced the power of narrative-driven strategies.

Long gone are the days of simply showcasing features; today’s buyers (in both B2B and B2C scenarios) want stories that resonate in some capacity with strong, well-thought-out narratives.

As Mina Luce Liang, former Agency Strategist and Founder of sticky icky designs, explained: “From my experience, the best ads are the ones that make you truly ‘feel something’.

“That feeling can be anything from intrigue to humor to relaxation, but its clear objective is to make an impact on the viewer’s emotions some way or another.”

How the internet brought about a new way of advertising

The explosion of the internet and social platforms has allowed brands to connect with customers in different ways.

Targeted ads based on location, demographics, interests, and behaviors all came into play thanks to elements such as third-party cookies.

Moreover, the internet has given birth to content marketing, where brands can provide valuable information and engage with their audiences through a variety of mediums such as blogs, videos, audio, and social media posts.

This interactive, two-way communication channel enabled brands to build relationships and foster loyalty, rather than just pushing products.

Adobe is a prime example of a company that has excelled at content marketing.

What a view 🌤️ by @AnarkyDesigns pic.twitter.com/cJ1sfpVWYI

— Adobe Photoshop (@Photoshop) May 23, 2024

Given Photoshop’s position as the image-editing software market leader, Adobe is able to partner with creators to generate content that is both educational and entertaining.

This technique has provided the company with another avenue to connect with its audiences through great content, while also promoting its products through the medium its target audience enjoys the most: creativity.

Furthermore, the inclusion of its target audience’s favorite creators, as well as competitions and prizes, creates a link between the person who is already likely to be aware of the product and the creator that Adobe has decided to work with. This can often create a stronger bond between all parties involved.

Yasmin Bligh-Hasan, a freelance creative and alumni of the Gen Z copywriting community Word Tonic, also highlighted the importance of inclusion in terms of accessibility.

She said: “Ads need to be to-the-point, snappy, and be designed for accessibility by using fonts such as sans-serif.

“They also need to consider elements such as contrasting colors, easily digestible and clear language, strategic use of white space to reduce sensory overload, and providing alt text, captions, and other suitable ways of intaking information for people with various processing needs.”

Creativity in a world of metrics

In an age where consumers are increasingly skeptical of polished advertising, authenticity stands out.

Research shows that when it comes to choosing which brands to support, 88% of consumers value authenticity the most.

Yet, marketers and agencies are often held accountable for proving how effective a campaign has been, and this might cause a clash when it comes to reporting on success.

How you report on any given campaign depends on its main objective. For example, if the campaign is about engagement, metrics such as likes and shares will prove how far the message has been spread.

If it’s all about conversion, then click-through rate and sales will be the two main measurements that will indicate success.

However, when it comes to building an authentic brand, an easy mistake is to focus solely on metrics.

Those who think outside the box and use more personalized messaging might see better results in the long term due to the impact it has on the consumer.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="adobestock_550355260_1719300990227" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 5965/3355; max-width: 5965px;"></smartframe-embed>

One way to remain creative while maintaining a brand identity is through personalized ads via dynamic creative optimization (DCO).

DCO allows for the creation of multiple ad variations that are tailored to different audiences, and these can tap into what’s happening around the world at that current moment.

In the world of sports betting, this can be effective because of the live nature of sport; if the brand stays on top of the game, it can offer potential customers the best possible odds at any given time.

However, these types of creatives take up a fair amount of time and money.

For most businesses, whether they choose static or video ad formats, their products are timeless. An organization should only consider using DCO if they want a specific action at a specific time.

Another example is influencer marketing. Partnering and allowing established creators to produce their personal style of content with your product can create more trust with the brand as it respects their relationship with the audience.

Liang stated: “I found the biggest challenge to be brands that held onto previous campaigns and ways of working, instead of leaning into what works for performance creative.

“They can no longer base their advertising ideas on a one-size-fits-all type of messaging. Engagement, trends, and attention all move so quickly that if a brand applied traditional ad logic to online campaigns, the results would be poor overall.

“When I worked on the agency side of things, it was difficult to explain this to more traditional brands. But I believe most marketers will now admit that flexibility is essential for success.”

The role of user-generated content (UGC)

User-generated content (UGC) continues to be a powerful tool for brands as it is considered to be one of the most authentic, relatable, and often more engaging forms of content than that which is professionally produced.

It involves customers sharing their experiences and stories, which in turn creates a sense of community and trust around the brand.

UGC advertisements have up to four times the click-through rate of other forms of advertising, with 84% of consumers trusting recommendations from people they know over other forms of advertising.

However, according to Liang, this form of storytelling doesn’t always resonate with an audience. She said: “It all depends on the product. I’ve had clients who generate most of their revenue from UGCs and others for whom this creative format has never stuck.”

She elaborated further by explaining that most people nowadays are savvy enough to understand if something is too focused on pitching the product, rather than remaining authentic and the creator giving an honest opinion.

Liang added: “I’ve found UGCs work for products of lower price points, especially those that come across as a ‘hack’-like designer-inspired fragrances. In this context, UGC ads feel most authentic; as if they were a boosted organic video.

“Viewers can sniff from a mile away if it comes across as forced, which means the success of UGCs comes down to quite a few elements, including product fit, organic script, visuals, and delivery.”

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="adobestock_596056384_1719478309788" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 6720/4480; max-width: 6720px;"></smartframe-embed>

The key to a thriving UGC campaign is understanding your target audience, their content preferences, and what resonates with them.

By speaking their language in a less structured manner, a brand might have a new form of content that fuels both engagement and reach.

That’s one reason why Bligh-Hasan believes that UGC content is non-negotiable. She said: “It creates a sense of inclusivity and accessibility. Without seeing yourself represented through the product, you feel misunderstood and less likely to interact further.

“Gen Z loves humor, sustainability, wild aesthetics, inclusivity, accessibility, and cutting the fluff. Companies whose product has these attributes and are promoted authentically by real customers will see the most success.”

Creativity and authenticity – a match made in advertising heaven

As consumers are met with more advertisements than ever, brands are expected to do more to get their attention and convey their messages effectively.

From long-form emotive videos to giving complete control go to online creators, there are many different avenues for brands and agencies to explore.

The key to success in any approach lies in establishing an authentic connection with the audience, which takes both time and freedom.

This means empowering creatives to think outside the box and craft content that resonates on a deeper level.

Bligh-Hasan highlighted the potential challenge of opposition from brands accustomed to older practices. “Brands being resistant to change is a huge problem for many young creatives.

“If a brand isn’t employing its target audience to bring them the knowledge they’re lacking, it’s unlikely they’ll see great success as they won’t understand what makes this new generation light up.”

Metrics remain important for measuring success, but prioritizing genuine audience engagement is becoming the quickest way to build brand loyalty.

Standing out from feature-heavy ads and predictable content might feel risky, but it should be seen as an opportunity.

By using data to understand what truly connects with your audience, and then having the freedom to experiment, you can create something with impact.

As Bligh-Hasan summarized: “Brands face the challenge of standing out in a market where ‘uniqueness’ and ‘authenticity’ is everyone’s USP. How is anyone supposed to create a completely fresh brand/product/service that blows people’s minds if everyone else is trying to do the same thing on every other platform?

“It’s about making a simple solution to a simple problem from a unique angle. You don’t need to be the next Elon Musk, but you do need to know what specifically you’re solving, who you’re solving it for, and how you’re going to appeal to them consistently in the places you find them.”

What exactly is a premium publisher? Why is a high-quality publisher so desirable? And what should businesses be aware of when targeting such sites? Here’s what you need to know.

Not all digital ad placements are equal. In fact, research demonstrates that the environment in which an ad is shown influences how it’s received, shaping everything from users’ memory of ads to their opinion of them.

One study found that premium digital environments lead to higher levels of brand recognition and more powerful memory encoding. Compared to run-of-the-mill internet ads, they deliver 1.6 times the brand lift and up to 2.4 times better recall.

Why are premium publisher platforms crucial for ad tech and monetization?

Premium publishers are vital for generating revenues for brands and ad tech companies. This is because they act as trusted content providers, with a platform that has a high level of interaction and the ability to consistently connect with the appropriate target audience.

At first glance, the concept of premium seems straightforward. Upon closer inspection, however, the word “premium” could mean any number of things, such as a high Comscore ranking, legacy media, entertaining content, trustworthy and reputable sources, quality imagery, and few or no ads.

Ultimately, some consumers will always value niche and exclusive content, whereas others only trust well-known sources. Likewise, some brands prefer small but dedicated audiences over reach and scale.

With this in mind, it quickly becomes clear that the three different parties within the digital media and advertising ecosystem have varying – yet overlapping – priorities.

Advertisers seek a publisher with high brand equity, one that reflects well on their ads and offers quality ad inventory and real-time insights.

Meanwhile, audiences look for a positive user experience, interesting content, and minimal ad disruption, while publishers want to deliver an environment that will result in a dedicated audience, secure ad revenue, and easy ad management.

What each individual brand, publisher, or user defines as premium also depends on the part of the journey they’re in at a particular moment.

Start-ups have different requirements to established brands, and often casual audiences don’t necessarily place as much emphasis on the quality of their online environment compared to those researching a specific product.

Size is not everything when it comes to providing a premium environment either, especially if the level and quality of engagement are used as a benchmark. A small website can still have a high level of engagement that is valuable for brands looking for niche audiences if meaningful interactions are prioritized over inconsequential clicks.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="shutterstock_1024804060_1678962767646" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 7360/4912; max-width: 7360px;"></smartframe-embed>

What should brands consider when choosing digital publisher partnerships?

There will always be the possibility of advertising at cheaper rates and with wider nets. But brands and marketers must ask themselves whether they are looking to connect with consumers or simply increase clicks and views with little to no follow-up. Credible environments lend themselves to trust in content – and trust in ads by osmosis.

A cluster of studies over the last few years has confirmed this halo effect and its influence over ad effectiveness, as well as long-term favorable brand associations from memory encoding and personal relevance to emotional intensity.

Back in 2016, Comscore demonstrated that ads placed with publisher members of trade association Digital Content Next (DCN) had an average 67% higher brand lift than non-DCN publishers. The sites were also three times more effective in fuelling mid-funnel brand lift metrics, such as consideration, favorability, and intent to recommend.

Beyond that, advertisements seen on high-quality sites were shown to be 74% more likable and demonstrated 20% higher engagement than those on low-quality sites. Campaigns were also shown to have benefitted from up to 30% greater memorability, driven by brand-suitable content.

Part of the effectiveness of premium environments is also due to higher viewability rates, which include lower levels of invalid traffic. A 2020 study found that 48% of measurable ads on the open exchange were never actually seen. Smart placement – such as in-image advertising – ensures ads are actually in view and in prime positions.

Do brands build better advertising experiences with premium publishers?

More often than not, yes. Advertising with premium publishers ensures a good message has a greater chance of having the desired impact. It provides stronger brand safety amidst rising concerns about fake news and ad fraud, without missing out on opportunities.

In terms of brand safety, brands and advertisers alike will benefit from patronizing fair and credible titles, ones that support the public good, over media sensationalism and clickbait articles, which may draw in eyeballs but not guarantee long-term brand reputation.

Furthermore, publishers that have an understanding of their audience, and know how to connect with them, are more likely to be able to match advertiser and consumer needs, and provide content that fits with specific advertiser formats.

Research by AdTrust found that nearly half (48%) of respondents to its survey confirmed that trust in content increased the trust in the associated advertising, making it more likely a purchase will take place.

A premium environment proves that trust and transparency are not just buzzwords. A healthy media ecosystem benefits everyone, with brands maintaining their reputation, boosting ad performance and effectiveness; consumers enjoying a great experience; and publishers generating revenue and providing quality content.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="shutterstock_1710722323_1678896978474" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 5119/3413; max-width: 5119px;"></smartframe-embed>

What can brands and ad tech companies do to ensure a successful campaign with a premium publisher platform?

When searching for an environment that maximizes the chance of meaningful interaction, brands and ad tech companies should consider a few key things.

First, they should seek out publishers with a distinct brand identity and a loyal audience, which is more likely to result in a consistent level of engagement across content. This environment should be versatile and responsive to new media trends, and able to reach new demographics through emerging media.

Also important is an emphasis on quality over quantity to maximize ad effectiveness and create a positive experience and a strong relationship with users. If readers and viewers actively seek the environment because of a unique perspective or voice, it follows that publishers will end up with a comprehensive understanding of their audience’s wants and needs.

Finally, partners that limit brand safety risks and deliver efficient and privacy-safe targeting solutions through smart technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and human verification, are also highly desirable.

Premium publishers are those that evolve, updating their technologies, strategies, and methodologies to make the most of the digital environment. This means keeping up to date with new solutions to perennial issues such as brand safety.

Simplistic exclusion or inclusion lists – lists that often discriminate against minority media with very dedicated audiences, reporting on topical issues – are no longer, and arguably have never been, the most effective or equitable digital advertising strategy.

Why is contextual advertising becoming more important for premium publisher platforms and brands?

With the demise of third-party cookies, advertisers are looking for different approaches in order to reach their target audiences through digital channels.

Contextual targeting is able to determine nuance and meaning in page content through a combination of more sophisticated text, image, and video analysis to deliver highly relevant ads.

Rather than excluding topics, this in-depth understanding of on-site content helps identify and fund content in a brand-safe way. Advertisers can reach consumers who are open to purpose-driven messaging and looking for brands that share their values.

Businesses are realizing this too. The global contextual advertising spend was valued at around US$178.3bn in 2021 and is expected to more than double by 2027 (US$376.2bn).

By adopting and implementing tried-and-tested methods – contextual targeting has been proven to boost purchase intent and engagement – publishers can avoid missed ad opportunities, drive higher levels of attention, and build a more transparent and fair ecosystem.

How does SmartFrame support premium publisher platforms?

SmartFrame supports premium publishers in several ways.

First, publishers can eliminate the cost of image licensing by embedding free SmartFrame images from a growing network of content partners.

At the same time, they can generate new revenue streams from in-image advertising, which is contextually relevant to the image and surrounding content, with brand safety and user privacy assured at all times.

Furthermore, as SmartFrame detects visits from image indexing crawlers and provides a formatted JPEG thumbnail for display in search engine results pages, traffic can keep flowing to publishers’ sites from image search results.

Since these images are streamed to their site, they also help to keep the page light in weight while keeping the user experience high, without the cumulative layout shift that’s common to pages serving banner ads and MPUs in and around content.

With support for images measuring up to 100MP in resolution, SmartFrame ensures they look their best across a range of devices – even on HiDPI and Retina display devices.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="impressions_with_engagements_1678964670274" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1698/939; max-width: 1698px;"></smartframe-embed>

User experience is further enhanced through the integration of a range of interactive features, such as full-screen viewing and Hyper Zoom technology, which encourage engagement and help boost dwell times. Usage of these features is recorded too, and this data can be accessed by publishers through a performance reporting panel.

Online audiences are more distracted than ever. So how does contextual targeting take on the challenges of today’s digital environments to reach users effectively and in a privacy-compliant manner?

The average person spends seven hours online every day. In that time, they browse, communicate, shop, work, or watch. In the midst of all these activities, brands are competing to grab consumers’ attention: out of anything between 4,000 and 10,000 ads a day, we only really recollect a few (if any).

Economist Herbert A. Simon, who coined the term “the attention economy” in the 1970s, argued that where there is a “wealth of information” this must come at the expense of something else: specifically, the attention of those consuming it.

This makes an internet user’s attention one of their most valuable qualities. But where advertisers would previously rely on third-party cookies to gain a general understanding of the person on the other side of the screen – and importantly, what might catch their attention – this is no longer a viable option amidst a backdrop of evolving privacy legislation.

In the race to stand out amongst the noise, contextual targeting has emerged as a privacy-safe method to deliver relevant ads: ads based on the content a user is already consuming.

Contextual marketing: Where privacy meets relevance

As concern over how personal information is wielded to target ads has grown, both Apple and Google have taken steps to move away from cookie-based business models, with new privacy features often boosting their own platforms.

However, this has left smaller businesses in particular struggling. Without the resources or data to optimize their strategies and diversify across channels, these SMEs often lack the means to ensure their campaigns reach the right people and drive business goals.

Meanwhile, users are increasingly finding their attention stretched across multiple devices, channels, and activities: smartphones, laptops, tablets, and wearables (such as smartwatches) both compete and interact with each other. In fact, over a third of UK (36%) and US (33%) citizens own at least three devices.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="shutterstock_577077322_1679399636817" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 4945/3591; max-width: 4945px;"></smartframe-embed>

Contextual marketing anticipates consumers’ needs by targeting audiences based on what is relevant to them. By aligning an ad with the topic a user has sought out, it’s more likely this ad will be relevant enough to hook their attention.

If, on the contrary, the ad is inappropriate or unsuitable, a user will at best ignore it, and at worst, be irritated by it. As opposed to being bombarded with intrusive, irrelevant ads, contextual ads synchronize to a customer’s search, without following them around online in a way many find creepy.

How it works

While more traditional contextual marketing may have lacked precision, contemporary technologies are continuously evolving to meet advertisers’ challenges head-on.

More sophisticated text, image, and video analysis, paired with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more detailed metadata, have all contributed to injecting nuance into contextual strategy. As a result, it is now far easier to accurately interpret language, meaning, and emotion than when contextual targeting first surfaced.

The metadata appended to streamed images can be particularly precise as it uses a combination of human intervention and AI. Furthermore, streamed images have the added bonus of being able to host the ads themselves for maximum visibility. So, rather than popping up next to the sought-out content – or even more annoyingly, in front of it – image streaming utilizes the focal point of an article: the visual element.

Brands nowadays have far more understanding of, and control over, page-level data than when contextual first arrived on the scene, and the scope and detail of these insights today make targeting more accurate.

Advertisers can choose what kind of content their ad will be placed with by targeting particular keywords in web addresses, titles, meta descriptions, page content, and tags. Meanwhile, blocked keywords act as a means to avoid unsafe content.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="shutterstock_2110534226_1676044770774" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 4953/3303; max-width: 4953px;"></smartframe-embed>

Contextual targeting also empowers marketers to create a strategy that best suits their unique business needs. Marketers can base their insights on media content, semantic understanding, metadata (captions and URLs), search and intent signals, or a combination of these.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of these methods: according to IAS, purchase intent was 14% higher with in-context ads, and brand recall was four times as strong. Other research indicates that as many as 69% of consumers are more likely to engage with contextually relevant content, and 44% have tried a new brand upon seeing it within a contextually relevant setting.

Contextual targeting also goes hand-in-hand with the ad environment. Users tend to be 20% more engaged and consider ads on high-quality sites 74% more favorably than those on low-quality sites. Once again, this demonstrates the overall importance of context when it comes to online advertising, and shows how taking a two-pronged approach can help ensure brand-safe and suitable ad environments.

The nitty-gritty: Marketing niche products

McKinsey research reveals that nearly three-quarters (71%) of consumers want personalized interactions, with 76% feeling frustrated when this doesn’t happen. However, a further 61% feel concerned about the tracking of their online behaviors and browsing histories.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="shutterstock_2091670576_copy_1676046251697" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 2500/1667; max-width: 2500px;"></smartframe-embed>

Contextual targeting presents an answer to this.

If a user is searching for products that are sustainable, regional, or handmade, for example, they are much more likely to be interested in a similar item rather than one that is mass-produced.

Increasing relevance to the consumer in this way – by leveraging their particular, niche interests – can make it six times more likely an ad will be remembered – and increases attention scores by up to 107%. Aligning ads with interests makes ads more noticeable in the first place, becoming a crucial tactic in the attention economy.

Unlocking new audiences

Developing buyer personas based on demographic (age, gender, location, income), psychographic (interests, activities, values, lifestyle, opinions), and behavioral (internet behavior, ads interacted, and websites visited) segments can be an effective strategy.

However, now the use of tools such as third-party cookies – which impinge on individual privacy – is not an option, achieving this requires a robust data strategy that not every brand has access to. The evolved level of contextual targeting today goes beyond putting consumers into boxes, increasing the chance of reaching new, previously unidentified audiences.

The easiest way to think about this idea in practice is by considering conventionally gendered purchasing behaviors. Whereas beauty products were previously advertised toward women, research shows that 15% of heterosexual men already use makeup and male cosmetics and a further 17% would consider doing so in the future. Meanwhile, 43% of Gen Z would wear genderfluid fragrances.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="7d0b78d6f830c45ae5fcb6734143ff0d" image-id="shutterstock_2043915608_1679399748787" theme="blog-new" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 6720/4480; max-width: 6720px;"></smartframe-embed>

One brand has taken this concept a step further and curated a marketplace that specifically caters to certain moods, with a focus on sustainable, minority-owned, and gender-neutral products and services, rather than specific demographics. Targeting based on webpage content avoids the pitfalls of user stereotyping – which, despite all the available data, could still occur.

This does not mean that brands and marketing teams can’t adapt what they have learned so far, nor do they have to throw out insights gained through testing; this knowledge can be used in tandem with contextual targeting to expand reach.

Contextualizing the future

Contextual targeting future-proofs campaigns for further developments in General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) as well as other global regulations, while at the same time helping brands keep their ads relevant, engaging, and in suitable environments.

Not only does this meet evolving privacy needs, but it’s a step up from an online experience in which ads are perceived to be intrusive, annoying, and inappropriate.

Contextual targeting maintains revenue streams and enables campaign optimization through traditional measurements such as click-through rate (CTR), cost-per-click (CPC), and viewability, without depending on user information and personal data.

Already, users are more likely to notice in-context ads first, spending 3% more time on such an ad than on an out-of-context ad. With more investment and resources pouring into the global contextual advertising market – estimated to reach $376.2 billion by 2027 – this solution will only continue to develop and strengthen over time.
