Cultural heritage institutions play a vital role in our understanding of the world through the storage, preservation and display of their collections. We enjoy and learn from these today, and appreciate the value they will have for future generations.

These institutions face a variety of challenges, however, when it comes to maintaining and displaying their collections, and balancing these with any commercial objectives isn’t always straightforward.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created additional strain on the financial health of these organizations, which has served as a reminder of the value that’s placed on being able to visit them in person. But it has also underlined the importance of being able to access their collections remotely.

Ensuring that these collections are accessible by as wide an audience as possible is typically a term of the funding these institutions receive, but this requires sufficient resources, adequate protection of assets once they are publicly accessible, and a model that can ensure this entire process is sustainable.

So how can these institutions ensure they meet their various obligations and objectives? Can they make better use of existing and emerging technologies to increase the reach of these collections and ensure they maintain their value?
